American craft ales: Brewed in the USA

A new generation of American craft ales will take centre stage at next week's Great British Beer Festival. Will Hawkes asks, what's the secret of their success?.

Good beer was hard to come by in Los Angeles during the 1970s. If you wanted something with a bit more flavour and character than a glass of fizzy water, you were out of luck – unless, of course, you made your own. Not that it was legal to make home brew in the US at the time but, this being America, there was someone prepared to take on the law. That man was Doug Odell, who began brewing at his home in Southern California.

"It was a very unusual thing to do," says Odell, now the founder and owner of his eponymous brewery in Colorado. "It was hard, too. We lived in this huge city but I had to drive 30 miles to get to the nearest shop where I could buy home-brewing equipment. The ingredients were really basic – you'd buy a bag of hops but it wouldn't tell you what they were, how strong they were. The beers were pretty bad but I stuck with it."

Full Story..

'A lot of bottles: Glyn Roberts, manager of The Rake, a bar in London's Borough Market, which stocks many American craft beers, widely said to be 'the most innovative in the world'

Beer Spotlight - Atlantic Brewing Company Bar Harbor Real Ale

Bar Harbor Real Ale has become one of my favorites in the last year. It has a great malty taste and is very smooth. I don't see a lot of talk about it out there on the beer circuit, but I highly recommend it! Try it out if you get the chance and let us know what you think of it! Cheers, Tbim.

From Atlantic Brewing Company:

Bar Harbor Real Ale - A good, clean nutbrown ale with a malty body. This is our most popular ale due to its smooth and malty flavor. We use a mixture of pale, crystal and black malts in this one, and our primary hop is Target, though we also add some Whitbread Goldings Variation as well. The Real Ale is best fresh, so fresh in fact, that it's great right out of the bright tank. ABV 5.2%
